On September 9, 2024 international show business saw the great loss of a world-class entertainer – Caterina Valente. The many decades of her career are rightly acknowledged for her big success in Europe and the USA. However, Caterina's success in Japan is mentioned only in passing. …And More Bears closes this gap with the release of the CD 'Caterina Valente In Japan' – a compilation of her complete recordings in Japanese (including two bonus tracks).
It was a lucky coincidence which eventually established Caterina Valente's career in Japan after her initial success. The release of Ludwig van Beethoven's famous piano piece Für Elise, sung in a pop version was selected by Caterina's new label with the intention to test the Japanese market. Under the title Passion Flower, it became an evergreen – unforgotten until today, and was followed by productions specially designed for the Japanese record market.
Up to this day, many Best Of albums by Caterina Valente are continually being released in Japan, stating her lasting success in this country. However, there has never been a compilation featuring all her Japanese recordings on one CD. 'Caterina Valente In Japan' is much more than an informative chronicle of these recordings – it’s a colourful journey through the many facets of perfectly produced popular music.
She swings through Sakura, a song about the Japanese cherry blossom. Her interpretation of Oyedo Nihonbashi, a folk song about a legendary bridge in ancient Japan, remains faithful to the original. Una Sera Di Tokyo is a very atmospheric song about an evening in the Japanese capital, and in her most successful Japanese song, the pop song Koi No Bakansu, she sings about taking "holidays from love. " Two bossa nova titles are enchanting the listener with their elegance and very special flair – and of course Beethoven's classic standard Passion Flower is included as a bonus track. Caterina Valente also enjoyed much success with her interpretations of Latin music which had always been an in vital part of her stage shows and TV appearances. And so this tribute compilation closes with another bonus track, La Malagueña, an especially popular song from this repertory.
