Songs about Spain, Chile, and Cuba; a reissue of the 1976 album.
Biermann wrote the songs on *There Is a Life Before Death* in 1975 for an anti-Franco congress in Offenbach. When the East German authorities then banned him from leaving the country, he released his songs about Spain a year later—the hated dictator had died in the meantime—with the defiant claim on the cover: There Is Life Before Death. Songs from the Spanish Civil War and about the bitter exile, about the cameraman in Chile during General Pinochet’s coup. And the famous song about the guerrilla leader Commandante Che Guevara in Cuba.
